Fiction Friday Post 1: The Things She Never Did

Welcome back to Fiction Friday! This week’s challenge was to start a story with the words, “She never…” and then continue writing from there. Did you write something? Share your Fiction Friday post or a link to it in the comments below.

The Things She Never Did

Fiction Friday Post: Things She Never Did

She never wore braids in her hair. It wasn’t that she didn’t like them, it was just that it took too much time in the morning. Her mother never had time to sit and play with her hair the way other mothers did with their daughters. Penny, for example, always came to school with elaborate hairstyles, and she carried that through as an adult, taking time to meticulously ensure that each piece of hair was in exactly the right place. Elizabeth found it annoying. And now, here they were, college roommates, ready to go out to the coffee shop, only Penny was taking forever to French braid pigtails into Elizabeth’s hair.

“I can’t believe you’ve never had braids before.”

“Believe it,” Elizabeth muttered. “Now I know why.”

“But you’re going to look so cute!”

“Ouch!”

“Oh come on, toughen up a bit, Lizzy.”

Elizabeth grimaced again. She hated being called “Lizzy.”

Ten minutes later, the hair was finally done. Elizabeth looked at herself in the mirror. She turned to a grinning Penny and said, “I look like I’m a junior high school student.”

“Perfect!” Penny clapped her hands together. “You look so cute!”

“I look like a pedophile’s dream.”

“Oh stop it. We should get going. Why can’t you just cheer up?”

Why can’t I just cheer up? Elizabeth thought to herself, and then finally shrugged. “Maybe I don’t want to cheer up. Maybe this is just how I am.”
